An estimated 36 percent of all people suffer from some form of dental anxiety. Naturally, this can make getting everything from routine care to important surgical procedures a challenge. Worse yet, if you’re too afraid to go to the oral surgeon to receive care, your problems are only likely to get worse.

Thankfully, many oral surgeons offer sedation dentistry options for patients who have fear or anxiety that might otherwise keep them from being treated. Here’s everything you need to know about sedation dentistry, and who it can help!

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is when your oral surgeon uses sedatives during a surgical procedure or treatment to help keep you calm, lessen the severity of your anxiety, or to manage a sensitive gag reflex. There are several different types of sedation available, however the type your surgeon chooses for you typically depends on the severity of your anxiety.

Am I A Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is an excellent option for patients of all ages, even children. Your surgeon will first need to verify that you are in good health, as patients with certain medical conditions may not be a good candidate for it. Thus, be sure to disclose your complete medical history to your surgeon prior to undergoing any sedation to avoid any dangerous interactions.

Here are the most common sedation dentistry options available.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is administered via a tube that fits in the nostrils, so your mouth is left clear for your procedure. All you need to do is breathe in through your nose, and you’ll experience a feeling of calm, yet you will remain completely awake.

You will still be able to answer questions and follow instructions, and because the gas leaves your system immediately, you will be able to return to your daily activities following your treatment (provided you did not undergo anything that prohibits this).

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation uses a pill prescribed by your oral surgeon prior to your appointment. While you should remain awake during treatment, some patients do occasionally fall asleep, so don’t worry if you do.

After treatment, you may feel groggy, and you should plan to take the rest of the day off and arrange for a ride home. You also may not remember anything about your treatment, which is also completely normal and no cause for concern.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered intravenously in the hand or arm. Your surgeon can adjust your medication in real-time, so if you need more, it can be increased as needed. IV Sedation is the fastest and strongest method of sedation, and as such, you will need a ride to and from your appointment as well as the rest of the day off to rest.

IV Conscious Sedation

IV conscious sedation works just like IV sedation, except you remain completely awake during your procedure. This allows you to answer questions and follow instructions, all while experiencing a deeper level of calm than with oral conscious or nitrous oxide sedation. Plus, because it is administered intravenously, your surgeon can adjust your medication during the procedure if necessary.

Does Sedation Dentistry Have Side Effects?

Most patients who undergo sedation dentistry will only experience grogginess or sleepiness following their treatment, but some patients may notice an increase in bruising following nitrous oxide, because it can deplete your vitamin B12 levels. To eliminate the risk of dangerous interactions, be sure to disclose all medications (both prescription and over the counter) to your surgeon prior to sedation.

Remember, it’s very common to be anxious or afraid of undergoing a surgical procedure, but don’t let fear get in the way of getting the treatment you need. Speak to your oral surgeon today about whether you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry.
